As part of their Connecting Classrooms programme, the British Council felicitated nearly 240 schools from across India in the city on Monday to recognize their work in bringing an international dimension into the regular curriculum. Fifteen schools from Mumbai / Thane region were awarded for their outstanding work in various projects and modules for the International School Award (ISA).
Rittika Parruk, assistant director (schools), British Council, said, "At British Council, we believe that young people need to move out of the isolated world, so we support them to get involved in activities on a diverse platform." Among the various modules provided for schools, this programme reaches close to 1,500 institutes across the country. UK Aid, along with British Council, works with school-to-school partnerships where schools are introduced to institutes in UK and other countries. "We want to promote exchange of ideas in a global context through simple exercises. We help schools bring an international dimension to teaching as well," added Parruk. British Council has built an online course, which can be used by schools free of cost.
Kamla High School in Khar was one of the schools to be felicitated for the longest-running educational partnership with a UK school, and sustaining the partnership without any project funding that has lasted for almost 11 years now. Rekha Shahani, principal of the school, said, "We realized that our students as well as teachers were being exposed to interesting and global concepts and decided to facilitate this partnership on our own. We have an exchange programme every year." For Ryan Internatioanl School in Kharghar, this was the first brush with the ISA. Sanchayeeta Mitra, project co-ordinator for the school, said, "The biggest advantage is that students as well as teachers are introduced to a totally international dimension." MKES English Medium School and Veer Bhagat Singh Vidyalaya from Malad, among others, were also felicitated.
Along with schools, teachers too were felicitated for undertaking an online course either at the undergraduate or post-graduate level. "We hold leadership programmes for teachers and support schools for special trainings for teachers too," added Parruk.
