Malayalam University inaugurated

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the much awaited 'Malayalam University' at Thunjanparambu, the land of Malayalam Patriarch Thunjath Ramanujam Ezhuthachan, in Tirur.

Speaking on the occasion, Chandy said the government would move ahead with the intention of making Malayalam language compulsory in all schools in the state.

The aim of the government after setting up the Malayalam university would be to get a classical language status for malayalam, he said.

K Jayakumar Vice-Chancellor of the University, said the institution would also offer priority to research courses after post-graduation.

The varsity's logo, designed by Artist Namboothiri, was released at the function by Chandy.

The University will have five chairs in the name of Raja Ravi Varma, Swathi Thirunal, C V Raman Pillai, Kumaranasan and Herman Gundert.

Prominent writers M T Vasudevan Nair and T Padmanabhan, winners of Ezhuthachan Award, were felicitated at the function.
