The Symbiosis Open Education Society's (SOES) newly developed campus skill development institute and community college at Paud village in Mulshi taluka, 17 km from Pune, will go functional from October 16.
The campus will offer vocational and skill development courses custom-ised to the requirements of the local industry and community. A community resource centre has also been developed for local farmers, women and children for providing information, counseling and guidance in vari-ous matters like agriculture, health, farming, dairy and handicraft.
Swati Mujumdar, SOES principal director, said, "The Symbiosis Institute of Skill Development is a new initiative undertaken with the mission of creating a large pool of skilled workforce."
"This is a step further to the Symbiosis Community College, which was started in 2009 from a makeshift campus, as an alternative education system for the underprivileged, rural women and school dropouts. So far, 400 students have successfully completed various courses from the com-munity college," she said.
The new campus has a state of the art infrastructure including classrooms, laboratories and workshops meant for conducting vocational and short term courses in association with local industry and community stakehold-ers, she said.
Mujumdar said, "The skill development institute will provide advance skill courses in high growth sectors such as automobile, manufacturing and construction. We are in dialogue with some of the legal industrial houses to facilitate specific needs like on job training. Courses in the areas of denting, painting, welding, auto electrician, two-wheeler mechanics etc. will be started from the institute."
Maharashtra minister for higher and technical education and power Rajesh Tope will inaugurate the new campus at 11.30 am on October 16. Managing director and CEO of National Skill Development Corporation Dilip Chenoy will be the guest of honour.
