A PIL seeking to direct the transport department officials to consider safety of all the children travelling through the public transport and government buses and direct the government transport authorities also to frame regulations, as in the case of private school buses, was filed at the Madras High Court bench.
Justice P.P.S.Janarthana Raja and Justice M Duraiswamy ordered notice to the Government transport and Education Eepartment returnable within 15 days.
The petitioner A Arunothayam Erskine, Founder, Southern Alliance for Ensuring Child Rights, said the government had been extending many supports for the school children from poor and marginalized families. They had launched free bus pass scheme for 2012-13 for 27.2lakh students.
While implementing such a scheme, steps should be taken to provide safety for the students. Most of the governent and government aided school children were only using public transport system.
The petitioner said the rules applicable for private school buses should be made applicable for government buses also. "Children special" bus trips could be deployed during the school hours to match the number of free buses in that particular route and experienced crew should be deployed in such buses.
