The country may be achieving less-than-desired growth in infrastructure. But the growth in social infrastructure such as education and health has outstripped GDP growth in the past seven years.
The combined spending of both central and state governments in social infrastructure from 2003-04 to 2010-11 increased at a compound annual growth rate of (CAGR) of 18.7%, which is higher than the CAGR of nominal GDP that came at 15.3%. But the spending on physical infrastructure (15.7%) just about kept pace with nominal GDP growth, data compiled by ratings agency Crisil showed.
As a result, the share of spending on social infrastructure in GDP increased from 4.1% to 5% during this period, while the share of physical infrastructure spending in GDP improved only marginally from 4.5% to 4.6%.
