Lack of English skills, logical reasoning and numerical ability result in low campus placement

With lack of English skills, logical reasoning and numerical ability only 10 per cent of students from Madras University’s affiliated arts and science colleges got placed in a recent campus interview.

Madras University vice-chancellor, Prof G. Thiruvasagam, said 5,367 candidates from 32 arts and science colleges, including two government colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts, participated in the campus interview.

Of them, only 499 (9.99 per cent) from 27 colleges cleared written and personal interviews to get placed in the private IT company which conducted the drive.

According to a study done by the company, 4,075 students among the 5,367 did not clear the cut-off of 8 marks in the numerical ability section in the written test.

Prof Thiruvasagam said only 32 colleges made their students attend the campus interview while the university had sent invitation to 100 colleges in its fold.

The vice-chancellor also lamented that most private colleges do not provide quality soft skills to its students.

“We have found several private colleges charging hefty fees to impart soft skills to students but the University Grants Commission norms allow a college to charge only `500 per student. I don’t know on what basis the colleges charge more than the prescribed fee,” he added.

The study also revealed that of the total number of students who attended the interview, 985 (18.35 per cent) were male and 4,382 (81.65 per cent) were female students.
