Proposed Central University at Motihari will not be named after Mahatma Gandhi.

The Centre does not appear to be inclined to meet the demand of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to name the proposed Central University at Motihari after Mahatma Gandhi.

An indication to this effect was given by HRD minister Kapil Sibal when he told reporters here that no such institution has been named after any leader so far.
 
Kumar had asked the Centre to name the Central University at Motihari after Mahatma Gandhi as the place has been "karambhoomi" of the father of the nation. The Centre, which sanctioned two universities at Motihari and Gaya, had decided to name them as Central University North Bihar and Central University South Bihar respectively.

The decision to set up the two Central Universities was taken by the Centre following the prolonged slug-fest between Bihar government and the HRD Ministry over the location of the Central University in the state.
 
While the HRD had proposed a Central University at Gaya, the state government had insisted that it should be setup at Motihari.
 
Kumar in a letter to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had said since Motihari has been "karambhoomi" (work place) of Mahatma Gandhi it would be proper to name the university after him". He had suggested the university be named either as 'Mahatama Gandhi Central University' or 'Bapu Central University'.

Sources in the HRD Ministry, however, said they would examine the suggestion of the Parliamentary Standing Committee which will examine the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill for setting up two Universities in Bihar.
