The KPES Higher Secondary School in Kayanthodi, Kuttyadi may have won a state award for imparting the best education in Information Technology (IT), but it also clearly believes in training its students in more earthy endeavours.
Students, who are members of the school’s eco-club, learn to farm on an acre of land belonging to a teacher of the school, K.T. Kunahammed.
M.P. Mohandas, coordinator of the eco-club that has 250 members in all, says, “This academic year, the eco club’s focus is on growing crops and students wholeheartedly welcome it.”
Students were divided into groups of 50 for transplanting paddy and were involved in the process of cultivation till the very end.
Mr Mohandas added,“We have harvested the wheat and it is used for mid-day meals provided by the school,” explaining that experienced farmers were roped in to conduct classes for the students on the intricacies of agricultural operations. Not only were they able to take part in discussions, but also enjoyed demonstrations.
Besides growing various kinds of crops, the students grow a wide variety of vegetables without the use of chemical pesticides on a 50 cent plot on campus.
The vegetables they grow are sold in markets outside. Bananas and tapioca are also cultivated on a 20 cent plot as part of the eco-club’s programmes.
