Government to bring distance education system under TNOU

The state government is exploring possibilities to close down distance education system in all state universities and bring it under the Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU).

State government sources said several academicians and educationists were concerned about irregularities in distance education institutes attached to state universities.

The distance education system has now turned out as a money spinner for vested interests, the sources said.

State government has received suggestions from academicians to merge distance education institutes in state universities with TNOU, for which it was started.

Sources said chief minister J. Jayalalithaa started the TNOU during 2002 for the benefit of destitute, physically challenged, working men and women and those who discontinued their studies for various reasons.

“The university was not able to attract more students as conventional universities too kept offering distance education programmes shrouded with lot of scams”, the sources said.

Welcoming the state government’s proposal, Prof C. Pichandy, general secretary of Association of University Teachers (AUT) said government should act immediately to bring all distance education institutes under TNOU’s ambit.
