Recession and global slowdown influences girls to opt for management studies as a career option

The current recession and global economic slowdown has made several girl students look at management studies as a career option.

As many as 59,920 women candidates have registered for the common admission test (CAT) for the IIMs and several top B-schools in the country.

This represents 28 per cent of the total of 2.14 lakh CAT aspirants who have registered for the test this year, exceeding last year’s 2.05 lakh.

A BPO analyst, R. Aarthi says, “I am certain that after doing MBA from one of the IIM’s, I will get a mid-management position for a salary not less than ` 50,000 per month so I plan to take CAT this year.”

Prof. L.S. Ganesh from IIT Madras said the number of women applicants would increase as the number of women in the workforce had seen an increase.

“Undergraduate engineering programmes too have seen an increase in enrolment of girl students,” he said.

Prof. S.S.S. Kumar, CAT 2012 convenor, said registration numbers have increased marginally over the last year.

The CAT voucher sale saw an increase of 4 per cent over last year.
