The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations (BMC) improvement committee gave its nod  to a proposal, allowing private players to use 50 per cent of the civic body's plots reserved for primary and secondary schools, for developing their educational institutes.

As per the decision, it is mandatory for private players to construct buildings meant for educational purposes only on the reserved plots to be handed over to them on lease.

The proposal awaits sanction from the civic body's general body and the Urban Development Department (UDD) of the state government.

"Earlier, it was mandatory for private players to allot 15 per cent seats in their schools for students referred to them by civic education officers. However, now 15 per cent area will be developed by private players and handed over to the BMC," improvement committee chairman Ram Barot said.

He said there are around 700 plots reserved for this purpose as per the development plan.

"BMC plots will be leased to private parties only after education officer recommends it," he said.
