Maharashtra government seeks community help for successful implementation of RTE act

The state education department on Tuesday launched a community outreach programme 'Shikshanacha Haq Abhiyan' for 'stronger' implementation of the Right to Education Act ( RTE). While most clauses of the Act have already been implemented in the state, the reservation policy will have to be followed by schools from the next academic year.

"The state education department is leaving no stone unturned in making this policy work. We realized that the community can play a greater role in this process and help make education accessible to more children," said Sanjay Deshmukh, former director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, state education minister Rajendra Darda and other officials from the education sector were present at the launch.

Pawar said that to avoid any form of communalism in schools, the quota system for admissions based on caste should be done away with.

"The education system has become child centric as opposed to examination centric. It is now our responsibility to ensure that every child makes the best of the right to free and compulsory education," said Chavan.
