Over 5,500 posts of teachers are lying vacant in around 1,750 schools run by the three newly-created municipal bodies in the national capital.
According to official data, 5,568 posts were lying vacant in the three civic bodies with North Delhi Municipal Corporation topping the list with 1,971 vacancies.
The East Delhi Corporation closely follows the North Corporation with 1,958 vacancies while there are 1,639 vacancies in the South Delhi Corporation.
The Corporations were trifurcated this year and came into being in April only. According to the figures, the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had appointed 3,848 posts between 2009-10 and 2011-12. Still, officials said, there were 5,568 vacancies.
In 2009-10, the unified MCD filled 719 posts while the next year, 1,821 vacancies were filled. In 2011-12, 1,308 vacancies were filled. The New Delhi Municipal Council, whose jurisdiction is in the VVIP areas, has 142 vacant posts of teachers.
Officials said steps have been taken to fill the vacant posts with the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board for filling up the vacant posts under direct recruitment quota.
