Chennai: UGC will soon direct the Tamil Nadu higher education department to close doors for distance mode of education in technical universities
According to sources, the government has taken a serious view in this regard, as the education imparted through distance mode was not of good quality and it need to improve the work churned out by them.
The government had already banned research programmes like M.Phil and Ph.D through distance mode a few years ago, remarking the research work was sub-standard of quality.
In its earlier circular, the UGC clearly stated that the deemed universities could not launch their distance mode of education unless proper approval was obtained from the Distance Education Council (DEC) and the UGC.
In spite of this direction, some private unaided universities have already started and continue to run the courses including technical education, the sources added.
But the Tamil Nadu government could not take any measures against those institutions as they were established under the UGC Act. 'We intend to issue circulars to the four units of Anna University not to start any technical education through distance education mode. If they have started such courses, they would be advised to wind up,' said an officer of the department.
