The University of Mysore has set up a Learning Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (LRCVC) at its library on Manasagangotri campus here.
Minister for Higher Education C.T. Ravi officially inaugurated it on Friday. The library started functioning two months ago.
Assistive technologies such as magic magnification software pro, talking typing teaching pro, JAWS pro talking software and so on are available at the centre to enable the visually impaired access, study, and create scholarly resources. The centre is equipped to print Braille books and has plans to set up a Braille library.
The visually impaired can use the Internet, read full text e-books, e-journals, e-theses, and so on.
Assistant librarian Venkatesh, who is in-charge of the centre, said, “As the text is converted into speech with the help of assistive technologies, the visually impaired can access the resources.”
Visually impaired persons, those with partial sight, and people with low vision can make use of the facility, he added. At present, around 20 visually challenged persons were using the facility.
The university has taken up a project titled ‘Dhrushtee — Centre for Education of Visually Challenged’ to provide innovative teaching techniques that can have far-reaching effects on the lives of the visually challenged, according to the centre.
The library provides access to more than 13,000 e-journals, e-books, and e-theses through its e-resources portal.Visually challenged persons will use the JAWS screen reading software, while those with low vision will use the magic screen magnification software.
The computer screen can be enlarged from 2x to 16x, enabling low vision students to view the monitor well, a release added.
