Collector recommends derecognition to Jeppiar Institute of Technology for infrastructural deficiencies

The state Government is studying the Collector's report recommending derecognition to Jeppiar Institute of Technology at nearby Kunnam village for 'infrastructural deficiencies'.

Asked about progress of the issue, Dr T S Sridhar, Higher Education Secretary told reporters the education department looks into academic infrastructure like staff adequacy and equipment while local Bodies and administration are responsible for the building infrastructure.

Various provisions and aspects have to be studied and looked into, he said adding student safety would be always a crucial factor in any decision. He said a duly constituted committee looks into complaints of lack of academic infrastructure in colleges.

He was here to preside over the convocation at the S S K V college of science and Arts. On the June Government Order on instituting funds to assist Institutions of Excellence, he said many colleges and universities had availed the opportunity. Those identifying their core strengths in areas like Biochemistry, Maths, Nanotechnology and commerce and IT have applied for creating additional facility for post doctoral and Research programs.

Claiming there was enormous response for rural colleges, he said in 81 Arts and sciences colleges where 250 courses were created, admission applications have exceeded 400 and 500 in each college. Twenty two new colleges had been started in two years to fulfill the mission of achieving 40 million student enrolment in the year 2020.

Dr Sridhar said maximum enrolment of students touched 1.27 lakh in colleges (including engineering) this year, compared to 1.10 lakh the previous year. The BEd colleges have also been increased from 10 to 620 now he said , as example of government's efforts at creating teaching infrastructure.
