The fee committee headed by justice N V Balasubramanian, has released the annual tuition fee for the MBBS and BDS courses in self-financing medical colleges hiking it by a substantial margin.
The five member committee, comprising of the Health Secretary, Chartered Accountant and a former VC of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, has permitted private medical colleges to increase annual tuition fee by Rs 35,000 and private dental colleges by Rs15,000 after consulting experts and working out the overhead costs.

To add on, Sri Muthkumaran Medical College, Chennai Medical college Hospital, Tagore Medical College, Annapoorna Medical college, Madha Medical College and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical college have been permitted to charge Rs2.60 lakh.
The committee, however, added that it could only regulate the tuition fee and not other fees charged by the college.
Now as the tuition fee has been fixed between 2.3 lakh and 2.8 lakh for the MBBS courses and 1 lakh for BDS course, earlier several complaints had poured in about some colleges charging even up to 7 lakh a year.
Fee for new medical colleges has been fixed at 2.3 lakh.
