The State government on Thursday approved a three-member committee recommended by Anna University’s ad hoc syndicate panel to run the institution until a Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
The committee will have Ramesh Chand Meena, Commissioner of Technical Education, as convenor, and include Professors P. Kaliraj and M. Sekar.
The university’s ad hoc syndicate committee met on Thursday and recommended the names of the members of the committee.
The V-C is appointed through a long process that involves formation of a search committee, which will consider several names and recommend a list of three to the Governor-Chancellor, who will appoint one of them.
The Syndicate committee met after the government rejected its earlier recommendation that named P. Mannar Jawahar, whose term as Vice-Chancellor got over on Tuesday, and M. Sekar, who is the Dean, College of Engineering, Guindy, said sources in the Higher Education department. The third member would usually be a government nominee.
Recalling the earlier meeting of the ad hoc committee, a member said Mr. Jawahar, who was the Vice-Chancellor at the time of the meeting, came and proposed his own name for the three-member committee. As he was the chairman of the committee, none of the members were able to oppose it.
When one of the members wanted to know the reason for not considering Prof. Kaliraj, Dean, Alagappa College of Technology, and senior-most professor in the university, Mr. Jawahar had told them that the senior-most professor rule would apply only after the merger of five technical universities with the parent Anna University and till then, the (ad hoc) syndicate committee would make its own decision.
