Deemed universities are also poised to adopt the single entrance test for undergraduate engineering programmes as they have given their "in-principle" approval to the format of examination proposed for the elite technical institutes of the country.
At present, several deemed universities conduct their own entrance tests, while some adopt AIEEE scores and the rest take state JEE results. This step is aimed at reducing stress among students having to appear in multiple exams.
The development came at a meeting of the representatives of these varsities with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and in backdrop of the IITs opposing the proposed single entrance examination.
Sibal said the deemed universities were welcome to join the proposed test so that not only the system of exam is streamlined but also reduces the stress on the students appearing in multiple tests.
At the same time, he allowed flexibilities to the varsities in adopting the format of the test, said HRD Ministry official, adding close to 130 representatives of these universities attended the meet.
He said the varsities would have the freedom to chose appropriate weightages for performance in Class XII Boards and the main exam normalised on percentile basis.
He even said universities willing to give 100 per cent weightage to class XII board marks performance for admission were also welcome to do so.
The minister's suggestion implies students aspiring to join engineering programmes under these universities would not have to appear for the advance test as has been proposed under the new system.
"After detailed discussions, the universities welcomed the proposal of having a single exam in engineering giving weightage to school board marks. They assured Sibal that they would be intimating their decision on the weightages for the two Board marks and the main exam," a ministry statement said.
Institutions that have concerns may also indicate the same so that they could be resolved at a separate meeting, the statement added.
The meeting was held on June 25 in the backdrop of stiff opposition by some IITs to the proposed test, with IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Delhi refusing to adopt it.
While the Joint Admission Board, comprising IIT directors, is believed to have given its consent to a compromise formula floated by the ministry to end the impasse, the IIT council will meet here on Wednesday to discuss the formula.
