15 new engineering college gets AICTE nod

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has cleared the proposal of 15 trusts from Tamil Nadu to start new engineering colleges in the state.

With the approval of these 15 private engineering colleges, the state is expected to get an additional 4,500 seats for government’s single window counselling for private engineering colleges and the total number of engineering colleges will be about 560.

According to a senior AICTE official, about 100 trusts/societies had applied to the AICTE for permission to start engineering colleges in the state. “Of the 100 applications, the council found 15 to be fit to start new engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Among the 15 cleared this year, we had raised queries for nine colleges last year asking them to rectify deficiencies we had cited and after they set things right, we gave them the letter of approval,” the official said.

Pointing out that more than 50 engineering colleges in the state had applied for increase in intake for this academic year, the official said several colleges had been permitted to increase their intake in courses like Mechanical, Civil and Electronics & Communication Engineering.

In an attempt to increase accountability and liability among private engineering colleges, from this academic year, the council plans to conduct surprise checks in 10 per cent of the colleges in the state.
“We have about 10,000 private engineering colleges in India.

So, every year, we will conduct surprise checks in 1,000 engineering colleges. This year, we found lack of faculty and facility in 71 colleges in Tamil Nadu, to whom we have issued showcause notices,” the official added.
