Committee told to fix fees ranging from 4-5 lacs per year

Private medical colleges in the state have urged the permanent fee fixation committee headed by Justice N.V. Balasubramanian to fix fees ranging from Rs 4-5 lakh per year for MBBS course. At present, these colleges charge an annual fee of Rs 2.5 to Rs 3 lakhs per year.

College management say that with the increase in hospital expenditure and sixth pay commission salary for doctors, it had become difficult for them to run the college with fees fixed by the committee.

The chairman of committee on fixation of fee in respect of self-financing professional colleges had sent letter to principal of private medical colleges in the state a couple of months ago seeking several details like annual expenditure of the college, faculty salary and student’s fees.

One of the administrators of a private medical college said that there were over six private medical colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.

The college managements represented to the committee and sought to increase the fees from the existing Rs 3 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs per year for MBBS,” the administrator said.
