On June 12, 1942, the then Diwan of Travancore C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer opened a new school in the city with a vision to provide education to girls. Seventy years later, Karthika Tirunal Government VHSS for Girls can claim to be among the best government schools in the State.
On Friday, the school, at Manacaud here, began its year-long platinum jubilee celebrations. Head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma inaugurated the programme. Minister for Education P.K. Abdu Rabb opened a new Inclusive Education for Disabled (IED) resource centre at the school. Mayor K. Chandrika released the logo which was designed for the celebrations.
Shashi Tharoor, MP, stressed the importance of educating the girl child. “If a society has to develop, its women have to be educated. If women are empowered through education, her family will be empowered, and in turn, society too will benefit,” he said.
As part of the celebrations, science fairs, food fests, crafts exhibitions, and seminars will be organised.
