In a first of its kind initiative, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University will introduce e-courses for the Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry degrees from the current academic year.
Tanuvas vice-chancellor Dr R Prabhakaran informed that, as part of the programme, e-learning laboratories are being established at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, to treat animals, and even do surgeries on them online.
The university is ready with the module of the e-courses, sanctioned under the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The process of creating the e-content for 69 courses was spread over December 2007 to June 2012 and as many as 79 content developers were roped in to draw up the online (web) and offline (CD / DVD) e-modules .
More than 3,000 animations and numerous visuals and images were developed for inclusion in the lessons to make the courses interesting and interactive. Power-point slides with voice-overs were also created for each theory lesson.
The audios on slides will be available in MP3 format to allow users to download them, the vice-chancellor explains.
According to Madras Veterinary College sources, its e-course will be offered in nine semesters spread over five years of the degree course and comprise 177 credit hours.
The e- course will have 101 theory and 76 practical lessons, with each theory lesson incorporating a quiz-like test to enable self-evaluation by the students, they add.
