West Bengals to get 43 Primary Teachers' Training Institutes

Updated on: Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today told reporters that the Centre has sanctioned 43 Primary Teachers' Training Institutes for West Bengal where courses will begin next year,

The 43 PTTIs, sanctioned by the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE), would cover 16 of the 19 districts of the state, except East Midnapore, North 24-Parganas and Jalpaiguri.

The highest number of six PTTIs have been sanctioned for Kolkata and Burdwan districts.

During the previous Left Front regime, PTTI teachers had protested the Calcutta High Court decision that the courses run in the state were illegal in the absence of recognition by the NCTE.

The Union HRD Ministry had since intervened to settle the issue by arranging for the recognition of the courses by the NCTE.
