With schools and colleges preparing to reopen in the month of June, book makers and printers reveal that rise in price raw materials for making note books would result in higher prices this year.
In the process making notebooks, materials like white paper, binding board and gum are required that are sourced from various places. White paper is sourced comes from Pugalur and Pallipallyam, binding board is obtained from Erode, Mamarathupallyam, book binding cloth, 'CALICO" is obtained from Erode and the glue that puts all these things together is bought from Madurai.
Paper obtained from the paper mills is cut according to the appropriate size with specialized machines. If ruled notebooks are needed, lines are drawn on the white paper with help of ruling machine as per a specification. Earlier, cutting and binding were carried out separately. But, now, binding is carried out through a single machine named, 'Valpo', which, is capable of bringing out 1000 notebooks in one hour.
A paper merchant from Erode, told, " For manufacture of note books, we purchase white paper from Kugalur. A ton of white paper costs Rs54, 000 and the paper cost have gone up by Rs4, 000 per ton in the last 4 months. With one ton of white paper, it is possible to make 3000 note books of one quire size note books."
