Cuddalore: With education cost shooting up in India, many economically backward students find it difficult to purchase relevant academic books to pursue their education.

In the recent days, a novel venture termed 'book bank' has been coming up in various parts of the state that has facilitated these students from poor economic background. These banks help the students to pursue higher education in a cost-effective manner, without imposing much of economic burden on their families.
As per a rough estimate, an engineering student will have to spend Rs. 3,000 to Rs 4,000 on books per semester and as the student moves to the next semester the earlier investment on books will go waste. This novel venture,  ‘book bank’ acts as a cushion to avert such burden.

The prime objective of the book bank was to provide service to the needy students to successfully compete their educational pursuit.

Initially, to pick a book from the book bank, student need to make a reasonable deposit, later after completion of the semester the student will return the book paying a nominal charge of Rs 250/- or Rs300/- for its usage and collect the deposit made earlier.

However, running a book bank doesn't seem to be a smooth affair. Especially, after the splitting of Anna University – Chennai into four more entities the book banks need to invest a great deal on diverse syllabus.

This entailed huge investment on the one hand and dead capital on the volumes rendered outdated. Although, book banks face several liabilities like these but its service motive drive the show, say a book bank founder.
