Hisar: Harayana Agricultural University (HAU) has been declared as the best centre for research in potato and chosen for the award. The award will be presented at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during annual meet of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on August 10.
HAU Director of Research, Dr. R.P. Narwal while disclosing this here today said that the Department of Vegetable Science of this university is one among the 25 centres under the AICRP where research on improvement of potato crop was being carried out.
The Work of this centre had been recognized at the national level, he added.
The research work under the AICRP on potato is being carried out by a team of scientists including Drs. B S Lakra, A K Bhatia, R D Bhutani and S C Khurana under the leadership of senior Potato Breeder, Dr. K S Baswana.
The work of this team of scientists has been instrumental in development of agro-techniques and identification of new varieties of potato as a result of which the production and area under potato has increased significantly in Haryana state,'said the Dean, College of Agriculture and officiating Head, Department of Vegetable Science.
He said that apart from developing varieties resistant to apical leaf curl disease and late blight disease and identifying more remunerative cropping patterns based on potato, rice, wheat and bottle gourd crops, the team has been successful in developing useful agronomical practices and recommending nine high yielding potato hybrids for commercial cultivation in northern part of the country.
