Still there are nearly 39, 645 seats vacant, with 69,843 students so far joining engineering courses out of the 1,00,945 invited.
A report by Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) this year reveals 'that 2,654 students did not attend counselling on August 5 and around 30,766 engineering aspirants did not attend the counselling this year. However, 334 candidates skipped the counselling by not joining any college.'
Of the vacant 39,645 seats, 9,730 backward community seats and 9,409 seats belonging to scheduled castes are yet to be filled. Most of the top rating colleges have filled up their seats in the first phase of counselling, which ended on July 30 this year.
Less number of students (only 36.65 per cent) opted for information technology this year due to global economic slowdown and recession. About 5,658 students joined the course of which 3,373 are girls.
Electronics and communication engineering was the most sought after course with 75 per cent students joining the course..Mechanical engineering also attracted more number of students this year with 12,663 opting for the course.
