Lighting slumkids lives with education

To ensure that under-privileged kids are not deprived of its light and warmth, a group of 13 women had opened a school, Santushti Vidya Niketan, in New Partap Colony, near Chander Nagar, two years ago to provide free education to them. Contented with its success, they some days ago opened another such school on Hambran Road.

And on Monday, they started providing food to students on the campus, so that more and more kids from the nearby slums get enrolled in the institution.

As many as 125 students are enrolled in the centre on Hambran Road and over 100 in New Partap Colony school.

Kamlesh Minocha, a retired professor of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and resident of Civil Lines who started the initiative, said, ''Education is the right of every child. To ensure that under-privileged kids are not deprived of it, some years ago I joined hands with 13 like-minded women and started the school in New Partap Colony. These women do not take any salary, rather they arrange from their pockets school dresses, books, food and bags, among others, for the students.''

Sangeeta Sood, a member of the group and resident of Green Park, said, ''We opened our second school on Hambran Road as there are slums near it. We have appointed four teachers and the school provides education till Class V.''
Madhu Vij of South City, who joined the group recently, said, ''Doing such a thing for the poor gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction.''
