Academicians and career counsellors advise students to look out for career options other than engineering and medicine, as there are a lot of careers like journalism and law that offer lucrative pay packets for graduates.
Dr V. Vijayakumar, vice-chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, said law graduates had abundant employment offers in multi-national companies and foreign law firms. “It was only in the past that lawyers had to argue in courts. Today, the situation is different. Now, every company needs lawyers to handle labour contracts and agreements for purchase of goods, which increase the need for lawyers,” he said.
Prof S. Narasimhan, principal of D.G. Vaishnav arts and science college in the city, said courses like B.Com (bank management), B.Com (market survey and market research), B. Com (supply chain management) offer students a big pay packet.
Several pharmaceutical companies have recruited with a huge salary science students who studied courses like biochemistry and microbiology.
“These jobs require students who can do research to develop new drugs. Most of the students prefer engineering rather than sciences and don’t get into research so there is huge demand for science students”, he said.
Prof Narasimhan also said a science student gets an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in five years whereas an engineering student obtains one undergraduate degree in four years. “I think studying a unique science course is better than pursuing a regular engineering course,” he opined.
With the media market growing exponentially, journalism has also become a lucrative job for youngsters. Several television channels and newspapers pay salary on a par with top IT majors.
Now, media graduates also join foreign TV channels and websites and earn a rewarding salary.
