The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal to set up a medical college at Haripad as a public-private project.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after a Cabinet meeting that the National Thermal Power Corporation would provide land needed for the medical college.
Mr. Chandy said the government was planning meaningful changes in the higher education sector, as nothing substantial had been done in the sector after the Antony government decided to permit self-financing colleges in the private sector.
The Chief Minister said that no uncertainty regarding admissions and fee structure in private professional self-financing colleges would remain at the beginning of next academic year. The government was about to sign agreements with managements in this regard. This did not mean that there would not be any problems in the sector. But the government was there to tackle them, he added.
