Govt to set up 40 schools of education in selected varsities

The government proposes to set up about 40 schools of education in selected central, state and deemed universities working towards curriculum development and training teachers.
 
These schools are proposed to have centres devoted to pre-service education, centre for curriculum research, policy and educational development, centre for assessment and evaluation etc.
 
HRD Ministry officials said, the strategy is to identify 40 university departments based in central universities, selected state universities, deemed universities and other centres of higher education, including the regional colleges of education of the NCERT to establish Schools of Education, said
 
These schools would be engaged in research and material development in areas of Curriculum Studies, Pedagogic Studies, Assessment and evaluation apart from the responsibility of educating teachers, they said.
    
The pre-service education centre, for example, is expected to offer four-year undergraduate integrated programme in elementary teacher education and a two-year BEd programme of secondary teacher education, including a 6-8 months placement in schools during internship.
 
The initiatives form part of the government's ambitious programme to address the entire gamut of issues relating to teachers, teacher education and quality of teaching.
 
The issues concern teacher, faculty shortages and vacancies, recruitment policies, capacity building of teachers for improvement in qualification, pedagogic skills, technology enabled teaching etc under a national mission on teacher and teaching.
