Importance of communication skills stressed

The Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College conducted a one-day conference on the recent trends in the growth of the hotel industry. B. Gopinath, vice-president, The Residency, spoke to the students on the bright prospects that the hospitality industry held for them. He stressed on the importance of good communication skills to reach greater heights.

The Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science organised a faculty development programme. Faculty were trained in various effective classroom communication. They were also told the importance of e-learning.

The Department of Bioinformatics of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science and the Institute of Computational Biology, Bangalore, jointly organised a three-day workshop on Role of Systems Biology and Algorithms in Drug Discovery Process. The workshop dealt with different algorithms and their application to ‘omics’ studies.

The Department of Computer Science of Avinashilingam University for Women organised an association meeting. Resource persons spoke on Pervasive Computing. Participants were told of the use and application domain of pervasive computing.

They were also taught the location, environment, connectivity, bandwidth, input / output device, security domain and the need for pervasive computing.

The NSS volunteers of Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College organised a personality development camp at the Sri Ranganathar Temple, Palamalai Hills. More than 100 volunteers participated.

The Department of Commerce of Sree Narayana Guru College organised a seminar on e-learning. Participants were impressed upon the advantages of e-learning. They were told that while the attention span for a lecture was only seven minutes, a teacher took an hour to explain a concept in class. While in a classroom the subject is divided into units, in e-learning the subject is divided into modules and granules.
