JNU accepts students demands

students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) called for an indefinite hunger strike soon after assuming office,in absence of the JNUs administration not responding to issues pending for a long time. Thirty-three students continued the hunger strike that began on Wednesday, for the fifth consecutive day in front of the administrative block in the campus. After prolonged negotiations, the Academic Council (AC) of the JNU agreed to the main demands.

The demands which the universitys administration has agreed include review of reduction in the weighting of viva marks from 30% to 15% in accordance with a November 1980 Supreme Court judgment, increase in escort allowance, extension of research scholarship to seven years and inclusion of more districts in quartile and madrassas.

Meanwhile, classes were cancelled and a protest demonstration was organised in front of the school of social sciences, which was the venue for the AC meeting. The students union had been demanding that the AC approve of the five demands, which they had submitted in their agenda during the polls.

Sucheta De, president JNUSU says, Finally, we were successful in getting the administration to look into our demands. The high percentage of marks for viva-voice was discriminatory. Education is for everyone, and there are many bright students from backward sections who cannot make it in the viva. We will take these welcome steps to their logical conclusion.
