Academic Council meet beset with protest

The Academic Council meeting of the Delhi University  was marked by protests from three different groups demanding redress of their grievances.

Angry members of the Delhi University Teachers' Association sat on a dharna outside the Vice-Chancellor's office, demanding that the Vice-Chancellor's recent directive ordering teachers to display students attendance records at specified intervals and format should be decided by the Academic Council. They were joined by the Staff Association of Kirori Mal College alleging foul play and victimisation in the forced resignation of former Principal Dr. Bhim Sen. At the behest of the university, “the Governing Body,  initiated an enquiry into the conduct of Dr. Bhim Sen Singh in the agitation of the teachers against semester system in 2010. The Association secretary, Rudrashish Chakraborty termed this action of the university as mala fide and vindictive with the sole intention of victimising the principal who only listened to the teachers during a collective movement.”

The Students' Federation of India carried out a protest march from the Arts Faculty to the V-C's office against ban A.K Ramanujan's essay on the Ramayana.


The meeting of the Academic Council which started at 1-30 p.m. and went on till almost 10 p.m. took several decisions.The decision replacing the existing MBA (part time) three-year and MBA (part time) three-year health care administration programmes by two-year MBA and MBA health care administration (evening) programmes has further incensed the DUTA mainly because of the fee hike.
