A National Law University would be set up at Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Sonepat. The aim of the University is to achieve excellence in all branches of law and its allied disciplines by evolving and imparting comprehensive legal education. Students of the state will be reserved a minimum of 25 percent seats in the University.
On the concluding day of the Haryana Assembly session here a total of 16 Bills, including the National Law University Haryana Bill, 2012, five amendment Bills concerning the Universities, the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2012, were passed. One fifth of the total seats reserved for Haryana domicile shall be reserved for the wards of land owners whose land has been acquired under Land Acquisition Policy of the Government for Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonepat.
The admission for these one fifth seats will be made on the basis of merit in Common Law Admission Test. The reservation policy of the state government will be applicable for Haryana domicile students.
According to the statement of objects and reasons to enact this law, there is a need for trained law personnel in academia, litigation, corporate practice, government and civil society.
The University will be developed as a centre of excellence to organize advanced studies and research in all branches of law, to liaise with institutions of higher learning and research in India and abroad and to award degrees, titles and diploma in legal education.
There are presently 14 National Law Schools or Universities all over India which have earned a name and recognition across the boundaries. The House was told that the aim of setting up the University was also to improve access to quality legal education and to develop a serious research tradition that is globally competitive and to give rise to sustainable law training. The Governor of Haryana will be the Chancellor of the University.
