Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice President of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) said here on friday that scientific research in India should be society oriented and those institutions who are involved in R & D activities should undergo social audits for effective functioning. Mr. Pillai who is also the ex-officio Principal Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Kerala said that India must work towards regaining the eminent global status it once enjoyed during early decades of the last century.
He was here to inaugurate the National Science Day celebration. science is no longer perceived as a collection of insular disciplines and our scientists must move forward with a sense of national pride and patriotism, he said. He further added that progress can only be made by adopting a holistic approach and all our educational institutions and universities should give encouragement to inter-disciplinary research.
The Director of Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Der. N.P.Kurien felt that science needs to be promoted at the grassroots level and that the focus of our education system should on basic science.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Prof. C.G.Ramachandran Nair, former STEC chairman, Prof.D.Joseph Francis, former University of Kerala Professor, Kerala State Science and Technology Museum Director Arul Jerald Prakash, National Green Corps District Coordinator K.G.Ajit Kumar, noted science educator C.P.Aravindakshan, KSCSTE Joint Director V.Ajit Prabhu and KSCSTE Scientific Officer Binuja Thomas.
