A 3 day National conference on Corporate social responsibility was organised by XIMB Bhubaneshwar in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai to focus on issues faced by Corporate sector on implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility.
The Government of India's new guidelines makes CSR mandatory for Public Sector undertakings. There is alrady a government policy in existence which makes it mandatory for PSUs to spend a percentage of the net profit for CSR work. according to prof. Sunashis Ray, co-ordinator, Centre for Resettlement, Rehabilitation and Corporate Social Responsibility, XIMB, a Company Bill is in the offing making CSR mandatory for private sector too.
Around 11 corporate giants such as Airport Authority of India, Vedanta Alumina Limited, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Rourkela Steel Plant participated. Some of the key speakers at the conference were B L Bagra, CMD, Nalco Ltd; Huzaifa Khorakiwala, CEO, Wockhardt Foundation; Clement Chauvet, UNICEF; S C Padhi, D (P), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited; Prof Bobby Banerjee, University of Sydney; Prof Sanjoy Mukherjee IIM Shillong; Rajesh Chintak, TATA Steel; Dr N Seetharama, ABLE AG and Prof Freek Cronje, University of Northwest, South Africa. Around 60 papers were presented by 90 academicians at the conference.
The Companies further competed for XIMB-TISS Best CSR Project Award which was based on four broad criteria including planning, implementation, motivation and evaluation. The objective of the award is to make CSR more systematic.
