Students who wish to join the central Engineering Institutions will have to sit for a Common National examination from 2013 where weightage will be given to the State board results. However the state governments and private institutions have the option of not to join the common entrance test
The government has decided to merge both the IIT-JEE and AIEEE and hold a common entrance exam whereby the best scoring candidates can choose an institutions of his or her choice. The test will cover admission to 15 IITs, 30 National Institutes of Technology and four Indian Institute of Information Technology.
Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Chandigarh have decided to join this system but states like Tamilnadu, Himachal pradesh, Odisha, puducherry and West bengal have asked for more time to study the proposal. Henceforth the All India merit List will be used by all the universities and Institutions offering Engineering for the purpose of Admission.
According to a press briefing by the HRD Minister Mr. Kapil Sibalall the states have accepted in principle the proposal for common national examination with effect from 2013 with weightage to the state board results normalised on the basis of percentile formula. The proposal will be taken to the Central Advisory Board of Education for final endorsement.
The final merit list will be prepared with 40 per cent weightage to State Board examination results and 60 percent to entrance test result. The Indian statistical institute has derived the formula for equivalence across boards taking into account the results of last five years. The test will consist of two parts namely main and advanced to test the general aptitude and the subject knowledge.
