PG courses still a far cry in Bokaro colleges

Students seeking admission to post-graduate (PG) courses in government colleges affiliated to Vinobha Bhave University (VBU) in the city probably have to wait this session also.

VBU vice chancellor Rabindranath Bhagat, who earlier had announced opening of PG courses in colleges in 2012, said things are under process but it will take some time to launch the courses here. However, he did not announce any date in this regard indicating uncertainty.

Currently, not even a single government college in the district offers PG courses. Every year, several hundred students are forced to migrate to metropolitans or other big cities to pursue higher education, a student said. Introducing PG courses in colleges is one of the major demands of student unions.

Bhagat on Wednesday visited three institutions, including City College, Visthapit College and Chas College in the city. He laid the foundation of a stadium and canteen while inaugurating a biotech laboratory in City College. The stadium will be constructed with a fund of Rs 40 lakh.

However, praising good educational environment of the city, Bhagat said private colleges being setting up here are offering professional and technical courses. He said Bokaro which is witnessing rapid industrialization has got Guru Gobind Singh Education Society (GGES) engineering college, while two more management colleges are coming up soon.

"My priority is to develop a good educational environment and provide quality education to the children and youth," said Bhagat. He, however, expressed concern over dearth of manpower in colleges, which is also a barrier in introducing new courses.

"VBU is facing a dearth of teachers in each every department and in its colleges. Every month one or two teachers are retiring. A proposal has been sent to the government for recruitment of teachers to fulfill the requirement. With dearth of teachers, it is difficult to start PG courses here," said Bhagat.
