Chennai: Due to the introduction to shift system in Govt polytechnics, more than 8,000 students have joined polytechnic colleges this year.
Speaking to a newspaper, Mr V.K. Jeyakodi, commissioner of technical education, said that counselling for the 22 government polytechnics in state took place for about 10 days from last week of June.
Talking about the state government's initiative of launching second shift in polytechnic colleges had yielded good results, Mr Jeyakodi said that 3,234 students had joined 14 government polytechnics in which the shift system has been introduced.
Compared to 5,747 last year, a total of 8,993 students have joined government polytechnic colleges this year. The shift system will definitely help students from poor economic background to pursue technical education, he said.
The state government has also waived tuition fee of Rs 2,500 in its polytechnic colleges.
