Allahabad: In recognition of its achievements in the field of higher education, India has become the first Asian country to be chosen to host a global meet of international universities.
The International Association of Universities meet will be held in India in 2011.
'An agreement to this effect was reached at the third Global Meeting of the Association (GMA) held at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, this year,'President of Indian Association of Universities (IAU) M D Antiwar told PTI here.
'It is a matter of pride that India will become the first Asian country to host the event when the fourth GMA takes place in 2011,'Antiwar added.
'This mega-congregation of educationists and academicians is recognition of India's educational assets and potential and its growing clout in the academic world. The proposed event will pave the way for promoting closer academic ties, quality collaborations and joint academic initiatives with leading
universities,' Antiwar said.
The working committee of AIU will meet soon to prepare the list of probable venues and decide other modalities for the mega event, he said.
The IAU, which was founded in 1950, is a UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher education institutions which seeks to promote, through teaching, research and services, the principles of freedom, justice, human dignity and solidarity.
