Fill faculty posts by April: Gujarat Technological University to colleges

www.desicomments.com/dc2/03/192076/192076.jpg Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has warned that colleges that fail to fill vacant positions of teaching faculty and principals by April will face action by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). GTU has decided that it will make a representation to the technical body that the seats in the colleges be curtailed as they do not have adequate human resource to teach the students.

GTU vice-chancellor A K Aggrawal said that the university is extremely serious about ensuring that the colleges fill up vacant teaching positions. Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) of GTU has recently submitted its report pegging that 40 per cent seats of teaching faculty in self-financed technical degree, diploma engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA, architecture and hotel management colleges are vacant. Nearly 50 per cent of these colleges are headless and have no full-time principal.

"All colleges have been directed to fill vacant positions till April 2012 before the next academic session begins. Colleges that fail to do so will be named and recommended to the AICTE for a cut in the number of seats", Aggrawal said.

GTU officials have justified the warning saying that such extreme situations deem extreme action. Officials say that given the current apathy towards filling the teaching positions, 250-odd technical colleges may face action.

College-wise, engineering colleges may face a cut of 7,000 seats, pharmacy 2,000 seats. MBA colleges may face the risk of losing 2,000-odd seats while MCA colleges may lose 1,000-odd seats.

Technical colleges in Gujarat have been found to be severely lacking in infrastructure. While students pay an annual fee of Rs 55,000-85,000 to the colleges, a severe crunch of teaching staff is gross injustice to these students, say officials.
