An exclusive varsity for sports in Tamil Nadu

Today, sports require highly scientific and technical support systems that enable an athlete to achieve peak performance consistently at various levels.

Inter disciplinary approach between physical education and sports sciences would augment the development of sports in India on par with western countries.

The Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University established by an Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2004, is unique and the first of its kind in India as an affiliatory University, exclusively for Physical Education and Sports. After obtaining the accent from his Excellency the president of India on 5th August 2005, the said act came into force with effect from 15th September 2005.

Dr. K. Vaithianathan is present the Vice-chancellor and Dr. J.P. Sukumar functions as the registrar of this university. Currently, this university that functions from College Road, Nungambakkam would be soon shifted to Melakottaiyur between Vadalur and Kelambakkam, for which the Government of Tamil Nadu has allotted 125 acres of land. Construction process is already underway.

The university has five departments which offer innovative courses in the areas of Physical Education, Yoga, Exercise physiology & Biomechanics, Sports Management, Sports Psychology and Sociology, Advanced Sports Training and Sports Technology at post graduate and research levels.

Presently, there are 13 colleges affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University that offer sports related studies.

Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University offers both regular studies as well as studies through distance education mode.
