Stricter scrutiny of teaching, regular monitoring to assess students' learning graph and steps to protect interests of parents and teachers are some of major recommendations made by a Delhi government-appointed high-level committee to suggest ways for bringing reform in school education.
The Committee headed by former Delhi Chief Secretary Shailja Chandra submitted its report to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Appointed in April last year, the Committee was tasked to suggest amendments in the Delhi School Education Act and Rules 1973 to enhance educational infrastructure as well as improve standard of education in city schools.
"A series of recommendations have been made by the Committee to further improve standard of education in the city schools. It has particularly focused on improving teaching standards and monitoring of students' learning graph," a senior official said.
He said the Committee has suggested a new concept of conducting school inspections with the primary focus being on the learning outcomes of children.
The Committee consulted a wide range of stakeholders before finalising the recommendations in three volumes. Dikshit conveyed her gratitude to the Committee for submitting the recommendations with an aim to facilitate purposeful amendments in the Act and related rules.
"The Committee has also sincerely tried to understand the difficulties being faced by parents and teachers and suggested a set of steps to protect their interests. It has also suggested specific roles for school management," the official said.
Dikshit said the government will study the report and take all appropriate actions at the earliest.
