Anglo Indian school in Chennai completes 150 yrs

If you’ve studied at Stanes, you’re branded a ‘Stanite’, which is something that past students are proud of. ‘Going back to School’ is eagerly looked forward to; the memories, stories, punishments, achievements, walking through the corridors that automatically take you back in time.

This year, the beloved Anglo Indian school completes 150 years and to commemorate the occasion, the Past Students Association has put together the Stanfest Carnival to kick off celebrations and set the tone for a year filled with entertainment and events.

President of the Past Students Association, Sunil Wijeyanayake, says, “When we were in school, in the ‘70s, Stanes was the liveliest school in the city. Whether it was athletics, N.C.C, or boxing, we were the best at it. We thought a carnival was the perfect idea way of bringing the young and old together and having some fun. Many of us have children studying in the school as well.”

“Everything has been thought of; there are stalls for the young and old, there’s a fancy dress competition to keep children and mothers entertained while the guys have their fun. A live concert is to take place this evening, featuring a band of past students and their kids. It’s good to be back in school again, an event of this magnitude has never happened at any other school till date,” adds Sunil.

Mercy Oommen, correspondent of the school, is all smiles as she says, “This school has its own legacy, a legacy that every past student here is always happy to share, and we are truly very happy to be having this event.”

At the carnival, the principal walks through the crowds of students sporting a stylish hat, and poses for pictures along with his wife.

Students are seen having the time of their lives, at the games stands all over or standing by the fenced off basketball converted into a race track. Remote controlled cars zip down and there are replicas of Formula 1 cars on display. All in all, it’s an action packed day with fun for everyone.

Paul George Vedanayagam and his dad speak about their musical plans for the evening, “We are going to bring in the classic rock and roll vibes tonight. Hopefully, many of the past students will be transported back to the good old days in school. It’s the music of our generation, so we’re going to be rocking and rolling all evening long.”
