20,000 Engineering seats may go unfilled

Chennai: About 20,000 government quota seats in engineering colleges across the state are expected to remain vacant at the end of single window admission on Aug 10.

About 1,05,676 seats available in over 422 engineering colleges across the state, of which 41,623 seats got filled up until July 27 leaving 64,053 seats vacant, Dr V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, TNEA said.

Revealing about the expected status at the end of the entire counseling session, Dr. Ryhmend said that about 15,000 to 20,000 seats were expected to go without any takers.

He said, 'It is not due to fewer students joining engineering colleges this year, but the number of colleges and the available seats had increased significantly'. Similarly there were no takers for environmental engineering and medical electronics, and not even one student joined these courses this year.Thereupon, number of students abstaining from counselling had increased marginally to 12,105.
Last year, Anna University invited 1,13,391 students for 82,049 seats in 347 engineering colleges across the state and about 73,206 students joined various courses leaving about 8,000 seats vacant.
