The CBSE’s plan to introduce Chinese as a third language in schools in 2011 has been dropped due to the inability of teachers to pick up the language. Interested students may be sent to a private online educational firm to learn Chinese as a hobby, it says. This would cost each student Rs 1,600.
After discussing the modalities of training Indian teachers with China’s education minister Yuan Guiren, HRD minister Kapil Sibal had said in September 2010 that students in large numbers would learn Chinese and 200 Indian teachers would be trained in the first phase. The CBSE then announced the introduction of Chinese as the third language (optional), starting from class VI beginning academic year 2011-12.
