VIT aims to lift rural students

With an objective to create a working model that would help the rural students financially and guide them to pursue higher education, the VIT University has designed a programme called ‘Universal Higher Education’ and has given shape to it by roping in people representatives, non-government organisations and philanthropists.

The prime objective of the project was to ensure that each and every passing out student in the district should pursue higher studies and emerge as a role model for others, said Chancellor of the University G. Viswanathan, who launched the programme recently in Gudiyattam.

Detailing about the programme, he said it was designed to cover all higher secondary school students emerging successful in public examination in all 13 assembly segments.

“It will be first implemented in Gudiyattam and K.V. Kuppam constituencies in the coming academic year. We have surveyed and listed 4,700 students in the two constituencies.

Based on their performance in public examination and needs, we will extend our help to the students in pursuing higher education in government and private institutions within and outside the district,” he said.

To create a corpus fund, the university has roped in MLAs, local body representatives, NGOs and philanthropists from each constituency. “In the first meeting at Gudiyattam, the participants assured to fuel the project financially.

We were able to generate Rs 10 lakh in the first meeting. We are also planning to bring in industrialists, former students of VIT and other education institutions in the district to help more students. We will also soon form a trust to generate more funds,” he added.

Based on experience learnt through the implementation of the first phase of the programme, it will be replicated in the other 11 constituencies in the district, he further said.
