Government Girls Vocational Higher Secondary (GVHSS), Nadakkav, Kozhikode is a role model for all other schools in the city. The plethora of programmes along with the versatility and the creative approach it fosters is noteworthy.
“We really have a wide range of programmes like multimedia smart class rooms initiated in all class X sections and we have even been provided with 50 computers by IT giant, Infosys as well as a telescope by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum,’’ says A.K. Balan, principal, GVHSS.
“Our school is one amongst the few schools in Kozhikode that has implemented PRISM (promoting regional schools to international standards through multiple interventions). This year we got `7 lakh to modernise our library under the PRISM project,’’ adds P.K. Radhi, librarian.
“Along with the facility of telescopic viewing for our students, there is also an institution called the C.V. Raman Institute of Basis Astronomy where outsiders also get an opportunity to view the sky in the school premises.
There is also a mini stadium ground in the school that was erected with the help of the Kozhikode Sports Club,’’ added the principal. Said Radhi, “The school is about 120-years-old so we get `25 lakh, as part of the government’s heritage fund with which we ‘revamped’ the school --- laying tiles in all the classrooms and so on. We have also been assisted in the construction of the compound wall and waiting hall with money from the MLA fund.’’
“After observing our programmes MLA, Pradeep Kumar, sanctioned more funds so that we could construct a multipurpose theatre that can accommodate 2,000 people at a time and that has all the advanced technologies, This initiative will be a reality within a few months,’’ said Balan.
The construction of a classroom complex, basket ball court is all in progress. The school also contributes to the sports and academics scenario. In hockey, for instance, there are 12 state players and three Indian players from this school.
“All the hockey players of MG University are from this school. Twenty students from the school are being able to practice daily and are being provided with every facility under the ‘Day Boarder’ scheme of the State Sports Council,’’ added Balan.
The institution has also excelled in academics. “Last year in the VHC section our pass percentage was 99 per cent and 92 per cent in the HSS and in HS it was 86 per cent,’’ says Mustafa, teacher.
“The school is also involved with the students police cadet (SPC), NCC, and a student called Farsana has been selected as the best cadet in the district under the SPC,’’ added Shiju, the lab technician.
